More than 25 years in Southwest Calgary. Two decades building a Western Canadian business. Five years standing up for residents at City Hall, and now ready to bring that voice to the Alberta Legislature.
My name is Dan McLean, and I am seeking the United Conservative Party nomination in Calgary-Shaw.
I was raised on a farm outside the small city of Camrose, went to university in Edmonton, and more than 25 years ago moved to the beautiful city of Calgary. I made my home in Silverado, in the heart of Southwest Calgary, where I raised my family, built my business, and have been honoured to serve at City Hall as the City Councillor for Ward 13.
I started my own company in 1998 and worked very hard to grow the business and help raise my family. McLean Golf began as a small operation selling golf cars from my acreage outside Edmonton. Within a few years I secured distribution rights for Alberta and BC to the number-one selling golf car in the world, and grew the company into a major Western Canadian distributor, including supplying over 250 vehicles for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Now the kids are grown, I've sold the golf business, and it is time to do what I've always wanted: get more involved in politics and give back to the community that has supported my family and business for over 25 years.
I was elected Councillor for Ward 13 in October 2021. Over the past five years on Calgary City Council, I have worked to bring common sense to City Hall — standing up for taxpayers, advocating for safer communities, and pushing for greater accountability and fiscal responsibility.
Following the decision by my friend Rebecca Schulz to step down as MLA for Calgary-Shaw, I have spent time speaking with residents across the riding, listening to their concerns and seeking their input. I have been encouraged to step forward because residents want a continuation of the strong, principled leadership Rebecca has demonstrated, and I would be honoured to carry that work forward.
I am proud to support Premier Danielle Smith and the work her government is doing. We share a commitment to strengthening Alberta's economy and protecting the values that make this province such an incredible place to live.
The next provincial election will be critical to Alberta's future. We cannot afford to go backwards. I respectfully ask the residents of Calgary-Shaw for their support in becoming the next UCP candidate. To participate in the nomination, a UCP membership is required, and I encourage residents to sign up and make their voices heard.
